Funding Opportunities for African Scientists - Vol. 2

Additional funding opportunities are provided below.

1. Government of Flanders Master Mind Scholarships

Approximately 30 international students will benefit from this scheme in 2019/2020. A wide range of courses are eligible, both in science and humanities. The prospective student is expected to first apply for admission to an eligible master’s programme in a Flemish host institution. The institution would then nominate top students to compete for the scholarship. 

“The programme aims to promote Flanders and Brussels as a top study destination.”

Key dates: Application deadlines for master’s programmes in different Flemish universities vary from early February to April.

2. Utrecht Excellence Scholarships

20-25 scholarships will be available in 2019/2020. The prospective student is expected to first apply for admission to an eligible master’s programme.

Key dates: Deadline for application to an eligible master’s programme: 1st February 2019

3. Research Training Program: Australia

The scheme supports students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees. It is administered by the participating universities. RTP scholarships can be awarded towards tuition fees, stipend for living expenses or other research costs that relate to the research degree.

4. The Aga Khan International Scholarship Programme

“Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process”

“The Foundation accepts applications from nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique.”

Note that the scheme will not support studies in UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Norway and Ireland.

Key dates: Deadline for complete application: 31st March (However, earlier internal deadlines may be applicable in certain countries. Contact the local office to enquire) 

5. Fulbright Foreign Student Program

This scheme awards approximately 4000 scholarships per year. Eligibility and selection criteria vary from country to country.

6. VLIR-UOS Training and Masters Scholarships in Belgium

“VLIR-UOS supports partnerships between universities and university colleges in Flanders (Belgium) and the South looking for innovative responses to global and local challenges.”

Scholarships are available to students from 31 eligible countries to study in a Flemish university. The candidate is required to apply for both the eligible master’s programme and the scholarship. 

Key dates: Vary with the master’s programme; Most deadlines are between February and March.

7. Science@Leuven Scholarships

These scholarships are offered for Master’s studies in Statistics, Chemistry, Geography and Physics. Candidates must first apply for the master’s programme then register on the website for consideration for the scholarship.
