Scientist and entrepreneur - 5. Faten Hamdi: the PACEIM programme

There are more and more programmes that support entrepreneurship by scientists.

Aziz Nafa

"In recent years, support systems have arisen to help students trained in France or in Europe to develop business projects. In African countries, too, there is more return supoort for people with innovative ideas. For instance, there is the PACEIM programme, dedicated to master students and PhD candidates, who have innovative projects in varied fields."

Faten Hamdi

"PACEIM is now called MEETAFRICA. For those who are interested, they should look at the IRD website. Formerly, it only concerned the Maghreb countries and Lebanon; now it concerns all African countries, so it is an opportunity.

Furthermore, in Tunisia, hiring in higher education, and in public service in general, is overcrowded. Formerly, families urged their children to become civil servants. But now it's overcrowded. And so the State helps and encourages young people, doctors or those with a post-doctorate degree, to start their own businesses.

We have a multitude of programmes that support this. European programmes, national programmes or even programmes from the Gulf countries or investment funds that help young people to start their own businesses. It is true that at first it may seem difficult; especially when you think that you are made for teaching. But you have to go for it!

I think that African and Maghreb societies are changing and we have many needs. And it is by addressing these daily needs that we must have innovative ideas and get started."
